Colic

Babies come with many challenges. One of the most frustrating is colic.  Colic is a condition where otherwise healthy, well-fed babies cry and are inconsolable for long periods of time.  Colic is often determined by the length of time your baby cries.  Babies with colic often cry more than three hours a day, three days a week, for three weeks or longer.  This usually occurs when babies are between the ages of two weeks and four months old and appears in approximately 20% of all babies. The good news is that colic is usually short-lived and typically does not result in long-term problems.  Colic generally subsides when a baby is three to four months of age.

Causes of colic vary.  Some babies have increased activity of the digestive tube that can lead to colic. Colic can also be caused by too much air intake, where the air is trapped in the digestive tract creating gas and discomfort in the stomach.  Colic occurs predominately in younger babies because their digestive tracts are still developing.  By three to four months the digestive tract is fully developed.

There are several ways to decrease colic. One is to ensure the baby does not swallow excessive air when feeding.   This can be achieved by using an anti-colic baby bottle or ensuring baby has a proper latch on the breast while breastfeeding. Other ways to decrease colic include using gripe water, swaddling with the legs flexed, playing white noise to help calm the baby or taking a walk or a car ride with gentle movements may also help sooth baby.  The use of anticholinergic treatments can also help alleviate the symptoms. Try reducing your anxiety as babies can sense when parents are tense and anxious.  Colic can be extremely frustrating for a parent, so it’s important to have a support system that can help when you need a break.  Taking turns feeding the baby or soothing the baby will reduce stress.

There are several baby bottles on the market advertised to have anti-colic systems to reduce the intake of air.  These systems can have as many as five pieces (just for the anti-colic system) or as few as one single integrated nipple system.  The anti-colic systems can be located at the base of the bottle, in the container of the baby bottle or in the baby bottle nipple itself.  Each brand may have its own way of reducing colic - some are more effective than others.  It helps to select a bottle where the baby is able to control the flow from the bottle. When the baby controls the flow of the anti-colic bottle, the flow rate is neither too fast nor too slow, reducing gasping for air or sucking air unintentionally.
