How the Insurance-Covered Breast Pump Process Works

Did you know that you can get a free, insurance-covered breast pump for each pregnancy? Find out how through Ashland Women’s Health.

As you countdown to the arrival of baby, there are a million things on your to-do list. From packing your hospital bag to finding the perfect mobile to hang over the crib and so much more—the final countdown can feel like a whirlwind of last-minute preparations. Have you thought about how you’re going to feed your little one once he or she comes into the world?

If you’re planning on breastfeeding (the healthiest and most cost-effective option), you’ll likely need a great breast pump. As luck would have it, you can get one free through your insurance. And it’s easier than you might think. The team of real moms at Ashland Women’s Health will help you choose the best pump for you, and they handle everything from insurance documentation to shipping, providing new and expectant mothers with their insurance-covered breast pumps—free of charge!— all over the U.S.

How the Process Works

It may seem too good to be true, after all, “free” isn’t a word moms get to hear all the time. Under the Affordable Care Act, breast pumps are considered one of the ten essential health benefits, entitling every mom one insurance-covered breast pump per pregnancy.

So how does it work? The first step is to take the Ashland Women’s Health breast pump quiz or select the breast pump of your choice. After you select your breast pump, fill out your contact and insurance information on the order form. From there, the team at Ashland Women’s Health will call your insurance provider to confirm that your breast pump will be covered (please note, some restrictions apply to certain insurance plans). If Ashland Women’s Health gets the green light, they will get in touch with your physician to secure a prescription for your breast pump, and they’ll alert you as soon as you are approved. After that, their team will deliver your pump right to your door.

Selecting the Right Pump

Whether you plan on going back to work and need to keep your milk supply up to transition back and forth to breastfeeding (hello, the perfect mimijumi bottle!) or you see yourself as a more casual pumper, there are different pumps out there to suit every mom’s needs. Don’t feel pressured to accept the first pump your physician tells you about. Manual pumps for working moms just don’t cut it, and some manufacturers may not have the best selection for you and your baby.

As fun as an all-expenses-paid shopping spree may sound, deciding which pump is right for you and your baby can seem daunting. Thankfully, Ashland Women’s Health has a solution for that, too. Their breast pump quiz asks a few simple questions in order to find the perfect pump for your lifestyle and needs. They provide the largest selection of free insurance-covered breast pumps, so finding a pump that works for you should be one less thing to worry about as a new mom.

Additional Resources

In addition to pumps, most insurance plans cover additional accessories, including bottles. Ashland Women’s Health will handle the entire purchase and insurance claim process for your breast pump and accessories to save you those hefty out of pocket costs. Ashland Women’s Health advises all moms to apply for a pump whenever they are ready. Many moms purchase their pumps and accessories before baby arrives, but if you’re feeling overwhelmed during the final days or weeks of your pregnancy (which of course, is expected!), you don’t have to worry about pump shopping until your little one is born. Most moms get their pumps delivered within two days of completing the application online.

As an added bonus, The Lactation Network from Ashland Women’s Health provides additional support throughout a mom’s breastfeeding journey. Their internationally board-certified lactation consultants (or IBCLCs) offer 90 minutes of support to all moms—free with your insurance (some exclusions may apply).

If you choose to breastfeed your little one, you don’t have to go through the process alone. The team at Ashland Women’s Health can help guide you throughout the process and get all your insurance-covered pumping needs for free! Check out their website for more information and support.
